Grace O'Malley The Irish Pirate Queen

 Grace O’Malley was born in Clare Island County Mayo Ireland in 1530 to  Eoghan (Owen) and Maeve (Margaret)  O’Maille. Even though grace had one stepbrother, she inherited her family’s land, in Clew

Bay and the surrounding area. She was not formally educated but could read write and speak multiple languages. when she was a young girl her father told her she couldn’t sail because she was a girl so she chopped off her hair to look like a boy she also learned complicated sailing skills. When she was sixteen she married Donal O’Flaherty they had three children Owen, Murrough, and Margaret. When Donal stopped paying attention to the O’Flaherty clan Grace took over she started raiding ships going to the port of Galway demanding payments for safe passage in the O’Flaherty waters. When Donal was killed Grace defended his fortress from the clan Donal originally took it from. When she was forced from her husband’s castle she went back to Clare island. When grace had her crew she had as many as 200 sailing and fighting men and started raiding chips from Spain Portugal and France that sailed need clew bay. Her life at sea was hard with no privacy bad hygiene and being the only woman on board she could never show any signs of weakness and had to be physically and mentally stronger than her all-male crew. When grace got pregnant with her fourth child with her second husband she gave birth below deck while recovering her ship was attacked by Algerian pirates and her crew couldn’t handle her being gone being incredibly mad she went to the deck half-naked shooting her musket yelling and swearing. The pirates shooked at how she looked fled. In 1593 graces 2  sons and her brother were captured by England she met with Queen Elizabeth and grace didn’t speak English and Elizabeth didn’t speak Irish they spoke in Latin. Grace most likely died at RockFleet castle around the same time Elizabeth died

Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh

 

Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born February 6th, 1921 to Princess Alice of Battenburg and Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark the youngest of 5 being the only boy. When Phillip was 8 months old his family was exiled from Greece when his father was accused of treason when he worked with the greek army His family fled to Paris where they spent the next 10yrs. Phillip barely saw his parents in 1931 Alice had a nervous breakdown and was sent to a sanitarium in Switzerland. The day she was taking away the 5 children were sent away to return to their mother being gone later being diagnoses with schizophrenia. By 10 yrs old all 4 of his sisters had married german royalty and his father living in the south of France he was by himself. Alice's family took over Philip’s care. In 1937 at 16 his sister her husband and 2 children and a full term stillborn were killed in a plan crashed . Its beloved the crash happended during and emergency landing then his uncle and guardian George Mountbatten died from cancer. When he was 18yrs old he was at the royal naval college in England where he met 13yr old princess Elizabeth of york 7yrs later in 1947 they announced they were engaged. Before they got married Philip gave up his titles including his claim to the greek thrown gave himself the last name Mountbatten became a British citizen and confirmed at the church of England also agreed to not invite his sisters to the wedding due to them being married to germans. On his wedding day, King George gifted Phillip the titles duke of Edinburgh Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich. The queen and Philip have 4 children Charles prince of whales, Ann Princess royal, Prince Edward Earl of Wessex, and Prince Andrew Duke of york they have eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren sadly Prince Philip passed away on April 9th, 2021 at 99ys old and married 73yrs RIP ❤

The Tower of london

Built on the bank of the River Thames  The towers official name is Her Majestys Royal Palace and the fortress of the Tower of London was built in 1078 by William Conqueror in 1100 the castle was turned in to prison some of the more notable prisoners are

Ann Boleyn the second wife of Henry the 8th executed on May 19th, 1546.

                                                 

Sir Walter Raleigh was imprisoned twice at the tower the first time in 1592 the second time his family joined him were he fathered one of his children and devoted his time to writing, The princes of the tower to princes ages twelve and ten in 1483 the boys have placed them there after fathers death by there uncle and stripped them of there titles then took the throne for himself,

then Lady Jane Gray was the only queen for nine days when she was put in the Tower for treason.

The 143  crown jewels are held in the tower from rings to sovereign crowns and scepters all guarded but the yeoman warders or beefeaters. The tower is  also well known or its ghosts of various past inmates that have been executed

George Boldt

 

George Boldt was a Prussian immigrant At the age of 13, George started working in hotel kitchens and worked his way up to manager of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in new york city and owner of Bellevue-Stradford hotel in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

George and his wife loved the thousand island in new york state and dreamed of building a castle together so they bought Hart Island later changing the spelling to Heart Island Boldt Castle was built between 1900 and 1904 The castle was going to be a gift to Boldt’s wife Louise but construction stopped after her passing. George never returned to Heart Island but spent summers for the rest of his life in the thousand islands. Boldt passed away in 1913 The island cost George 20k to build the castle cost 2.5M (68m in today’s money) The island sat for 73 years till the Thousand Island Bridge Authority bought the island in 1977 for $! With the agreement that all proceeds would go to renovations so far, they have spent $15m on renovating the castle

Moulin Rouge

 

 The red windmill was  Built-in 1889 by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler in Jardin de  Paris doors opened in October 1889. The original building burned down in February 1915.

The moulin rouge was vary extravagant and over the top even had a 7 story elephant in the garden.  Joseph Oller bought the stucco elephant after seeing one at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1889. The elephant was used as a luxurious opium den where single men could be entertained by belly dancers. The elephant may have even had a small apartment on its back. I can’t find any info but at some point, there was also some sort of roller coaster called The Moulin Rouge Le Can Can Coaster. The moulin rouge is the birthplace of the modern  Can can dance.

Womans Rights

“We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men and women are created equal” is not just a line from Hamilton it was written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton who wrote the Declaration of sentiments in 1848 in Seneca Falls NY at the first Woman's rights convention. Where 300 people attended including 40 men. The meeting lasted two days on July 19th and 20th in the Wesleyan Chapel.  Not only were women's rights discussed but human rights. Three years after in Seneca falls there was an antislavery meeting where she met Susan B Anthony the two had a lifelong friendship and traveled the country. The two started a newspaper called The Revolution. the paper was printed from January 1868 to February 1872 it mostly covered women’s rights, prohibiting discrimination against woman’s voting and, woman’s suffrage. Sadly of the 68 women that signed the Declaration of sentiments in Seneca falls only one woman would live to see the 19th amendment be added to the declaration of independence in 1920 at the age of 91 where she was able to vote

Fredrick Douglass February 1818 to February 20th, 1895

Fredrick Douglass was a big advocate in human rights born a slave in Maryland until he escaped to New York City in 1838. in 1847 when he moves to Rochester where he started a weekly abolitionist newspaper a year later Fredrick was one of 32 men to sign the declaration of sentient were he met Susan b, Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady

The Fennimore Cooper

 

                                        

William Cooper December 2nd 1754 - December 22nd 1809

William Cooper was a husband to Elizabeth Fenimore and married on  December 12th  1774. He was a  merchant, land developer and the founder of Cooperstown NY. Later in life he was a politician and was appointed county judge then was in the US congress for Otsego county.

 

James Fenimore Cooper September 15th 1789 - September 14th 1851 

Born in Burlington, New Jersey the eleventh of twelve children at one year old his family moved to the town his father founded. James was enrolled at Yale but was kicked out when he blew up another student's door and locked a donkey in a library. When William died James and his four brothers inherited large sums of money and land. On January 1st 1811 he married Susan de Lancy. They had seven children 

Susan Fenimore Cooper daughter of James and Susan Fenimore Cooper Born on April 17th in 1813 in Scarsdale, New York. Susan was a founder of the thanksgiving hospital and an orphanage both on Cooperstown. She was also one of the first woman to write about natural history she also wrote about women's suffrage 

Otsego Hall built between 1793 and 1799 as the Coopers manor home located on the west side of Otsego lake. As of march 2017 the official name is the Fenimore Art Museum

The farmers Museum has been a working farm since 1830 originally owned by James Fennimore Cooper. The museum has 23,000 items and 24 buildings to show what life was like in the 19th century
